Merida, Mexico/September 23, 2016
A player gets set to smash a flaming ball through a hoop during a game of Pok-ta-Pok in Merida. The game, which was traditionally played by the ancient Maya and is considered by some to be a precursor to soccer, has several ways it can be played. In one version players have to use just their body - no hands, legs, feet or arms - to bounce the ball through the ring. In this reenactment players are allowed to use their hands but the rubbery ball is set alight.
